Die Republik Sudan ist ein Staat in Nordost-Afrika mit Zugang zum Roten Meer. Er grenzt im Norden an Ägypten, im Osten an Eritrea, im Südosten an Äthiopien, im Süden an den Südsudan, im Südwesten an die Zentralafrikanische Republik, im Westen an den Tschad und im Nordwesten an Libyen. Mit einer Fläche von mehr als 1,8 Millionen Quadratkilometern ist das Land etwa fünfmal so groß wie Deutschland und drittgrößter Flächenstaat des afrikanischen Kontinents.
Die Republik Sudan ist seit dem 1. Januar 1956 unabhängig vom Vereinigten Königreich. Seit dem 9. Juli 2011 ist der Südsudan nach einem Referendum 2011 als eigenständiger Staat vom Sudan unabhängig.
UN Security Council calls for Sudan Ramadan ceasefire
The United Nations Security Council calls for a ceasefire in Sudan to coincide with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan as conditions in the country deteriorate. Fourteen countries backed the resolution, proposed by Britain, with only Russia abstaining on the vote that called on „all parties to the conflict to seek a sustainable resolution to the conflict through dialogue.“ IMAGES
